Edge Craft Fayre

Saturday, January 2, 2010

In spite of the local weather forecast promising a better day on Saturday it was only slightly better than the torrential rain with high winds that lashed the area on Friday. We got to Edge Village Hall early so that we could set up the tables and as the other stallholders arrived we were able to direct them immediately to their tables. The hall was bigger and also a better shape, a perfect rectangle where Leonard Stanley’s Hall had alcoves in so the layout was much easier and with the additional planning the setting up was much easier for all.

Although Phoenix and Neils Yard Home were at our Leonard Stanley fayre the stallholders were different and it was lovely to meet them.

Ron's Stall We also had some different stalls with different products. Ronald Large a woodturner from Dursley had some beautiful products that he had made for sale, very reasonably priced. We chatted and he told me he loves working with wood -That was obvious from the craftmanship of his clocks, candle holders, bowls and other products.

There was a lovely cheese board with a glass domed lid, which I fell in love with. Sadly as I’m allergic to cheese I couldn’t really justify buying it. I did buy my first Christmas present from him and when he visits at Cranham I will be buying one of his glass lantern topped candle holders for my brother and sister-in-law.

I have my eye on another Christmas gift from another stallholder, Jean, who sold carved wooden birds and lovely wooden wind chimes. She in coming to our Cranham Christmas Fayre so I will buy those then.

It was great to meet Tony Marriot from Tony’s Toons and see his clever caricatures. They would make unique gifts which I can imagine would create a lot of laughter when received and for years afterwards. Tony displayed the original photos alongside the the caricatures and he really did capture the personality of the person; they were fascinating to see.

We were surprised at the number of local people who came to look around the stalls and had a cuppa in spite of the horrid weather. Fewer than Leonard Stanley but very intrepid we thought to venture out, and we enjoyed the afternoon which flew by.  It’s great to be able to chat to people about my jewellery and see their reactions to it. It’s boosted my confidence. I’ve always been a bit  of a perfectionist – Terry often says I’m my own worst critic as I chop through the silver to dismantle a piece when a twisted loop hasn’t gone quite the way I want it too.

I don’t think any of the stallholders did quite so well as last week but they all told us they were interested in future dates as they are arranged and several will be at Cranham in early December.
