Gemstone Flower Jewellery
This week Sea Witch’s Cavern launched a range of flower gemstone and sterling silver jewellery. It has been fun to design and create the range and it will expand as I discover more carved gemstone flower beads.
I fell in love with the Yellow Jade Lily Petal beads used for these earrings when I was browsing one of my overseas supplier websites and placed an order for them along with the New Jade, Yellow Jade and Carnelian flower beads.
I waited for them to arrive and was pleased when they came much quicker than I expected. I started using the Yellow Jade Lily petals because I already had a basic design in mind. When I make jewellery I’m not very scientific about it. I very rarely do drawings, I start with the idea that it is my mind and gradually build the design up, swapping beads and making additions as I go along until I am satisfied with how the piece is going to look.
I started working with two Jade Lily petals, which had minor chips in. Luckily out of the two strings I’d ordered they were the only two damaged and they were a good match so decided that I would use them as my prototype design and when completed they would not be for sale. The two additions to my original idea with the Lily Petal design was the sterling silver chain and bead stamens and the petalled sterling silver bead cap.
Once I was satisfied with the prototype I continued making up the rest of the Lily petals but not finishing them with either the ear wires or the chains. I needed daylight to be able to match as closely as possible into pairs the ones to make into earrings. One of the attractions for me of working with semi precious gemstones is that they come from the power of Mother Nature, which makes each of them unique. Their uniqueness can make them hard to match when used for earrings and is always something that needs to be done in daylight. The Jade Lily petals were particularly hard to match because there was a variation in size and shape as they are hand carved as well as colour and I needed help from one of my small team of helpers.
One set of Yellow Jade Flower earrings and pendants were put in a display for our first jewellery party and I wore the prototype pair, which are lovely to wear, not too heavy in spite of their size and they swing nicely. I was really thrilled when the set on display was sold at the party and the customer told me she noticed my earrings immediately on arrival and was hoping there would be others she could buy.
Below are a selection of photos of some of the other gemstone flower jewellery designs I have created.
